Lincoln officiated as prosecutor against an army officer. His accusation began with the following words:
“Gentlemen of the jury: we are here to judge this soldier for having beaten an elderly man”.
The defendant stood up violently and shouted:
_“I am not a soldier, I am an officer”!
_“I am sorry, Lincoln corrected, we are here to judge an officer, who is not a soldier, for having beaten an elderly person”.
